ADVICE COLUMN – Do you just so happen to be in a relationship every year during Valentine’s Day? Or is this your first time in a long time spending Valentine’s Day with that significant other? Here are a few suggestions as to what to do on this special day.
5. Dine out: If you’re looking for a place to indulge in a romantic evening with that special someone, check out the Melting Pot. There are five locations in Colorado but one in particular that may be enjoyable is the Louisville location. They’re offering $5 horse drawn carriage rides throughout downtown Louisville which run Saturday through Monday. The Melting Pot is also equipped with a “Lover’s Lane Package,” which is $150 per couple and includes private seating in a secluded area of the restaurant, your choice of a four course Big Night Out entree and a bottle of wine (and if you don’t drink, you’ll receive a $40 cocktail credit). To top it off it also comes with bouquet of three long-stem red roses in a keepsake vase and a framed picture of your special night. This may seem a little costly, and if it doesn’t quite fit your budget, Red Lobster has a $29.99 Dinner for Two special going on! You each choose a salad, an entree for the both of you which includes their new Wood-Grilled Shrimp with Parmesan Butter or Peach Bourbon BBQ Chicken and Shrimp, and your choice of an appetizer or dessert to share. Delicious food at a decent price!
4. Memorable keepsakes: Ceramics in the City is a fun place couples can go to paint pottery, which can include a keepsake picture frame that holds a picture of you both, or enjoy glass fusing like the pros do. Located on 19th and Pearl streets, it is open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sundays from noon – 6 p.m. You choose a piece of naked pottery which ranges from $10-$65 or a blank piece of glass which ranges from $12-$52; paint and any other utensils needed are provided.
3. Dinner and a movie: Cook a special dinner for your significant other equipped with candles, rose petals and a bottle of sparkling cider. Soft music playing in the background during dinner and pleasant conversation always sets a positive mood throughout the evening. End the night cuddling watching a movie both of you enjoy. (P.S. if you want to make the night extra special, try making white-chocolate covered strawberries. Purchase semi-sweet chocolate bits and white chocolate squares which you’ll melt in the microwave and dip the strawberries in. Then make sure your strawberries are placed on a pan with wax paper.)
2. Not-so romantic: Not interested in a romantic night? Competing against your significant other can always be fun! You can even make a bet that whoever wins has to be treated to dinner, a movie or a massage. Dave & Buster’s is always a fun and exciting place to enjoy an evening with your significant other. But, if you’re not too into arcade games, you can try your luck at other activities such as bowling, laser tag or paintball. Even grab a few other couples and plan a board game night. If competition isn’t what you’re into, ice skating is always be fun and instead of having the wall hold you up, the two of you can lean on each other.
1. Volunteer: If you and your significant other aren’t too big on Valentine’s Day, you can plan to volunteer at a homeless shelter or an organization that you are both passionate about. Not only does volunteering aid in bettering the community but it can also help strengthen your relationship. For example, if you’re interested in helping children, you can choose to become a mentor for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Denver organization. In this organization, you will be matched with a deserving child who is at risk, between the ages of 7-12 and lives in a single parent home. Being a “Big” (as they call it), you are helping these children gain self-esteem, better relationships with family and peers and avoid negative or delinquent behavior. Always a good choice for the philanthropic couple!
