The trend hit the runway for Ralph Lauren’s spring 2010 fashion show and has since inspired girls and guys alike to dress head-to-toe in the blue hue on the runway and in the streets. Even CU students have been spotted wearing the trend.
For the best look, pair a dark wash denim, either on top or bottom, with a lighter wash (so as to not look like a walking homogeneous denim blob). Pair with a girly flat or heel to spruce up the androgynous outfit and give it a pop of color.
According to Women’s Health Magazine, celebrity style expert Felix Mercado said, “Denim-on-denim is a hot trend, but make sure your denims don’t match—otherwise you’ll look straight from the ’80s. Try a chambray shirt with darker-rinse jeans for a booty-slimming effect.”
As well as switching up the colors, be sure to mix up the weights of the fabrics as well.
According to stylelist.com, Gap’s director of engagement marketing and public relations, Olivia Doyne said, “The trick with denim on denim is to make sure you’re mixing up both the fabric weights and the washes.”
Just remember to “keep it simple by avoiding tie-dyed, acid wash or printed denim,” according to Elle.com.
If wearing all denim is too brave of a move, opt for just a splash of blue with a jean jacket over a sundress or a denim woven top with a cotton skirt.
It doesn’t matter if they’re True Religion or if you picked it up at a vintage store, just remember to be creative and have fun with your jeans! Whether it’s a denim dress, jean jacket, shorts, or a blouse, you’re bound to look dashing in denim.
