Boulder Police reopened 13th Street and College Avenue after detonating a suspicious package in front of the Boulder Police Annex, said Sarah Huntley, Boulder Police spokeswoman.
At about 8:05 p.m. on Friday, two patrol officers found a blue nylon messenger bag propped against a wall in front of the Boulder Police Annex on the 1300 block of College Avenue, Huntley said.
“It looked out of place and unusual, so they called over another patrol officer who was trained as a bomb technician,” Huntley said.
The police took an x-ray of the bag, but were unable to get a clear image of its contents, so they decided to detonate the bag in case it was an explosive device, Huntley said.
“In order to do that, they closed down 13th and College and the two businesses that share the annex building closed early,” Huntley said.
After detonating the suspicious bag at 10:15 p.m., the officers determined it contained only personal belongings and no explosives. They then reopened the road, Huntley said.
It will remain unknown who the bag belonged to, Huntley said.
“The unfortunate part of the decision to detonate is there is never enough left to figure out the bag’s owner,” Huntley said.
