Students in Larry Frey’s COMM 1600 class will be taking their final Sunday morning at 10 a.m. as opposed to the time scheduled by CU.
According to the CU final exam policy, a final exam should be given as scheduled and not at other times, even if the faculty member and all students in a course agree to such a change, according to the CU Web site.
Communication professor Larry Frey said the final conflicted with the final of another large introductory communication course, Perspectives on Human Communication (COMM 1210), in which many students are also enrolled.
Frey said that Sunday morning was one of the few options, and he chose it so students could have more time to prepare.
“The options were for Sunday or late Thursday, Dec. 17, to avoid conflict with other days or times students might have exams,” Frey said.
Frey said the request for the final to occur outside the normal schedule was approved by Cindy White, the director of undergraduate studies for the Communication Department and Richard Nishikawa, the assistant dean for Curricular Affairs.
“Dr. Cindy White worked with Richard Nishikawa to ensure that we could offer the final examination outside of the regularly scheduled day,” Frey said.
Frey also said that he would make arrangements for students with religious obligations Sunday mornings.
“Like any class that I or any other professor teaches, I would, of course, make arrangements for an alternative to this or any other assignment for my classes if any were requested on the basis of religious observances,” Frey said.
Frey said he has not received any requests for alternative scheduling at this time.
Tina Govindarajan, a 19-year-old sophomore engineering major, said that if she was in two classes with conflicting finals times she would expect the professor to reschedule.
“It doesn’t seem like that much of a problem as long as he provides alternatives for students with previous obligations,” Govindarajan said. “In all honesty I would rather have finals that Sunday than the actual CU scheduled Saturday finals.”
Cody Berenson, a 19-year-old freshman open-option major, said he agreed that since it is a problem with a specific class, the final needed to be rescheduled.
“At least they have one done by Saturday,” Berenson said. “Some people have to wait until Thursday, and are taking finals when almost everyone else is done.”
The finals schedule policy can be viewed on the CU Web site.
