An investigation is currently underway concerning an incident that occurred at a Boulder fraternity house over the weekend, according to the Boulder Police Department.
According to the police blotter, a resident of the fraternity house was sleeping at his home on Sunday when a man entered his room and attempted to strangle him. The 22-year-old perpetrator was arrested for second-degree assault.
Marc Stine, Boulder Greek advocate, said the two individuals involved are both CU students. Names of the fraternity house and the students involved are not being released at this time due to ongoing investigation.
Stine said the Greek community is not looking to address the incident as an organization, as the police department is taking action.
“It occurred on one of our properties and was committed by an outsider. It’s something that could have happened at any place,” Stine said. “[It’s] a matter for the police and the courts.”
Stine said it is important to the Greek community that the homes they provide are safe for residents.
“It’s…one of our basic intents that people living in Greek houses…would be in a safer and more secure environment that the average student living in an apartment,” Stine said.
Stine said although some of the Greek houses in Boulder are not equipped with security cameras, the particular home where the incident occurred is equipped with them and those tapes have been given to the police.
In addition to the investigation that is underway with the Boulder Police Department, an investigation has also opened with the Office of Judicial Affairs at CU, said Bronson Hilliard, director of media relations at CU.
He said it is important to note that the two investigations are not connected.
“It’s important to realize one is not dependent on the other,” Hilliard said.
Further comment from the university could not be provided at this time, Hilliard said.
“I can’t comment or speculate on what might happen at either level,” Hilliard said in reference to the two investigations.
The CU Independent will publish more information as it becomes available.
