Dear NCAA,
Of all the things you get blamed for, I have defended you.
People claim you plot against Boise State, I say hogwash! People say your fines are steep, I say your fines are cheap. Everyone wants a playoff in college football, I say football until June has its drawbacks.
It was our thing. And it was wonderful.
And then … you killed it! And over what? Lunch?
Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant had lunch with former NFL player Deion Sanders and you cretins threw him out of college football for good. You Pete Rosed him for a sandwich!
What was going on in that little mind of yours?
You think it hurts Bryant? He’s the best receiver outside the NFL. You think he’s going to get second guessed for it? I can see the concern of all the NFL scouts now.
“Well he’s smart, fast and can jump through the uprights. But my main concern with him is that forbidden lunch he had with that Sanders character. What did he tip? And for the love of God, did he have an appetizer?! Did he?!”
But you know if that doesn’t happen, he’s going to see more zeroes than a model’s dressing room come April. And he’s going to forget all about your mindless actions.
It’s not himself Bryant hurt, it’s everyone else.
You hurt a stand-up guy like Oklahoma State quarterback Zac Robinson, who actually was out Thursday night against the Colorado Buffaloes. However, this Colorado native kept his Cowboys at No. 12 in the country without his two best playmakers in Bryant and running back Kendall Hunter. Robinson was a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender at the beginning of this year, but you never gave him the chance to compete with the Tim Tebows or Colt McCoys, did you? With two games left, Robinson’s numbers are a basement from what they were a year ago. He has more than 1,000 less passing yards and 10 less touchdowns, and despite his stats, he has managed to carry his team to victory after victory.
Without him, they almost dropped an egg against three-win Colorado.
But if possible, just think for a second. Bryant had caught four touchdowns in the three games he played this year. Last year, he ended with 19 of them. It was clear Robinson and Bryant were on a path to duplicate that success.
But now, we’ll never know.
You hurt the fans from Stillwater, Okla. They are the most underrated fans in the Big 12 Conference. The place is as loud as the 12th Man of Texas A&M and promises to be rowdier, too. Did you ever give them a shot to compete with Texas and all of their playmakers? No.
Colt McCoy to Jordan Shipley, eh, try Robinson to Bryant. Who really was the best team in the Big 12? I know trying to say that every player who misses a game is a reasonable excuse for losing is foolish. Injuries, like Robinson’s, and benching a player is all part of the game. But year-long suspensions over some grub isn’t … I am actually clean out of more food jokes but still — by God!
Finally, you hurt college football in 2009. We missed seeing one of the most exciting players in college football, we missed seeing a more competitive and exciting Big 12, and we missed a player who made college football all the more fun and intriguing for all of us fans. In the end, you tried dumbly flexing your muscles anyway. Whatever you tried to prove with this suspension, we couldn’t have missed your point more.
So to the NCAA men and women who have ruined more than the game itself in 2009, a Little Rascal by the name of Buckwheat said it best.
“You’re scuuuuuum between my toes!”
Priceless.
Sincerely,
NCAA hate letter No. 123901283120
