An uninvited guest in Ketchum Arts and Sciences attracted the attention of one witness and several officers Tuesday afternoon.
Edward Dawkins, 30, a transient, was allegedly found asleep in room eight of Ketchum at about 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, according to a CU police report. Police found Dawkins and sociology doctoral candidate Wade Smith, 31, outside the building.
Smith told police he found Dawkins, who when confronted “stated something about having a long night,” according to the police report. Dawkins then ran and Smith chased him outside Ketchum. He wrestled with Dawkins and “worried that he was going to swing at me” as he told the officers writing the report.
Searching Dawkins and a black brief case found nearby, police found a remote control for a sound system, two cell phones, an iPod, $482 in various denominations of cash and several sets of keys. Dawkins said the items, which were estimated to be worth $1,232, belonged to him and that he had been let into Ketchum by a janitor because he needed a place to sleep that night.
According to the report, an officer recognized most of the items as having been reported stolen from Ketchum on Sept. 22. In particular, $300 worth of $2 bills had been taken, along with several sets of keys. Staff in Ketchum were later able to “positively identify” the keys, several of the other items and Dawkins.
Dawkins was arrested for second degree burglary, first degree criminal trespass, theft of more than $1,000 and false reporting to authorities since he had allegedly given his name as “Hawkins” along with an address which does not exist.
