Campaign for Amendment 58 comes to Boulder
The National Education Association’s “Got Tuition?” campaign came to Boulder to collect names for a petition supporting Amendment 58 on Wednesday.
“It’s cool that they are out here fighting for students by creating awareness and an opportunity for change,” said Brittany Havey, “Got Tuition?” volunteer and junior pre-journalism major.
Starting quarterback Cody Hawkins came to the “Got Tuition?” table situated at the UMC fountain to show his support for Amendment 58 and to help collect signatures for the related petition.
If passed, Amendment 58 would stop the $300 million subsidy given to oil and gas companies every year in Colorado. In addition, Amendment 58 would triple the financial aid available to the 27 public institutions.
“Got Tuition?” is working to reform education cost nationally, not just in Colorado. The “Got Tuition?” Web site offers a list of positions on the subject for presidential candidates and members of congress.
“I think it’s important to lower tuition for everyone, not just in-state students,” said Jennifer Ward, a 22-year-old environmental studies major. “When I started here I paid in the 2000s now I am paying over 3000.”
According to the National Education Association, Colorado ranks 49th in the nation for providing in-state students with financial aid.
