What’s Good in Boulder
The Fox Theatre
1135 13th Street
The Fox Theatre, located in the heart of the Hill, was the first building in
the area granted “landmark status” by the city of Boulder. Though it only seats
700 people, the historic venue has staged acts stretching from The Dave
Matthews Band to Moby to Ben Harper. The Fox has also been home to several
local acts including Rose Hill Drive, The Fray and 3OH!3.
This fall, some highlights include: Umphrey’s McGee, Galactic, Mathew Sweet,
Bob Schneider and Jedi Mind Tricks. For more information, check out
www.foxtheatre.com.
The Boulder Theater
2032 14th Street
The Boulder Theater goes hand-in-hand with entertainment in Boulder. The
venue was originally opened in 1906 as an opera house and has been a
permanent part of Boulder history ever since. Teaming with local radio station
97.3 KBCO, the Boulder Theater presents “E-Town” with hosts Nick & Helen
Forster. Each week new acts are interviewed and perform, and then the show is aired
on KBCO.
This fall, some highlights include: The Robert Cray Band, Cold War Kids,
Yellowjackets and Henry Rollins. For more information, check out
www.bouldertheater.com.
CU Program Council
Various Locations
CU Program Council provides on campus entertainment for CU students at
various locations including Farrand Field, Folsom Field and Club 156, which located inside of University Memorial Center. Program Council showcased everything from pre-screenings of movies, local concerts, and even big acts. In the past,
“PC” arranged concerts with The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, R.E.M. and even The Ramones.
Though not all information is available yet, Program Council has arranged a
welcome concert and homecoming concert for CU students at Farrand Field, as
well as the first screening of the year with Harold & Kumar Escape from
Guantanamo Bay. For more information, check out
www.colorado.edu/programcouncil/.
Nissi’s
2675 North Park Drive (Lafayette)
Though Nissi’s appeals to a generally older age group, it could serve as a great
date place for college students. Both a music venue and award-winning
restaurant, Nissi’s has hosted such acts as Nina Storey, Otis Taylor, Todd Parker
Moore (from Big Head Todd and the Monsters) and Braddigan (from Dispatch).
Nissi’s is definitely on the pricier-side but offers an intimate venue with great
food.
This fall, some highlights include: Something Underground, Trace Bundy, and
Katie Herzig (from Newcomers Home). For more information, check out
www.nissis.com.
Pearl Street
Downtown Boulder
Pearl Street stands as one of Boulder’s biggest tourist attractions – for good
reason. This downtown area provides many restaurants including the five-star
rated Frasca on the east end of the mall. The restaurants offer everything from
Italian cuisine, world-class sushi, Mediterranean “tapas” and a wide variety of
vegetarian menus. Along the mall, several street performers attract huge
crowds with their quirky acts such as the “zip code” guy who can figure out personal traits about his audience just from their zip codes, and an extremely moldable man
who can contort his body into almost any position.
The fun doesn’t stop there, however; as the sun sets, the Boulder nightlife sets off. Offering a variety of scenes from live music, mechanical bull-riding or
getting into the Irish spirit at Conor O’Neill’s; the Boulder bar scene has
everything for those who can legally drink to enjoy.
Some popular bars include: Conor O’Neill’s, The Foundry, Redfish, 13th Street
Saloon and many more.
University Hill
West side of campus
Like Pearl Street, “the Hill” offers many fun bars for upperclassmen to go to such
as K’s China and the Sink but also has much more affordable food. Food places
vary from burritos to pizza to sandwiches and even to sushi. For those students
who are underage, the Hill also provides late-night food with Cosmo’s Pizza, Abo’s
Pizza, Tra Lings Chinese food and Jimmy John’s sandwiches.
Be sure to check out Half Fast Subs as well, a hybrid bar and sandwich shop.
Dairy Center
2590 Walnut Street
The Dairy Center for the Arts is exactly what its name suggests – a peformance arts center. Within the building are a professional performance space, two theaters, three galleries, classrooms and a conference room all dedicated to artistic pursuits. Whether a
student or spectator, the Dairy holds a wide variety of things to keep students
entertained and inspired.
Check out www.thedairy.org/ for a list of dance performances and art
exhibitions for this fall.
