Women’s tennis sweeps Missouri
The CU tennis team started its first of four home matches with a convincing win over Missouri Saturday, getting its first victory of the season in the Big 12 conference.
In an unbelievable turnaround, the team managed not only to win every singles match, but prevented any play into a third set. The doubles teams played equally well, with all three teams getting wins.
This was the same team that started the day 2-6, but apparently the momentum from the win over Arizona is gaining force.
“I hope we’ve got the momentum going. I think we are where we want to be right now, and I feel like we’ve got a lot of great matches coming up and so it’s just a matter of continuing what we’re doing and working hard and taking it one day at a time,” said coach Nicole Kenneally.
Apart from the growing momentum, it wasn’t any particular change or tweak that led Colorado (3-6) to victory over Mizzou (8-5). Instead it was a matter of hard work and dedication finally paying off, Kenneally said.
“It was a good team effort, we really had nine positions come out and compete hard and that’s really no different than what we’ve had in the season previously,” Kenneally said. “It’s just a matter of consistency; that you’re just trying to get better every day and it’s not like anything changed from the beginning of the semester to now.”
Maybe all the team needed was a little bit of luck from a couple of long-time fans of the CU sports program. In attendance were Peggy Cloppom and Betty Hoover, the famous seniors from the football and basketball games. Dressed from head-to-toe in CU attire they cheered the team on in what they say was their first visit to the tennis courts.
“These girls are very impressive and we’re very proud of them,” Hoover said.
They said they hope to attend more tennis matches in the future.
The team will continue its series of four home matches, playing Yale on Tuesday. But as the team starts the Big 12 Conference, they now have a positive outlook, said junior Franziska Jendrian.
“The team played awesome. We came out and fought. We were playing the way we wanted to from the very first point and not waiting for anything,” Jendrian said. “I am sure we’ll have more of these games and we’re very excited to start the Big 12 season now.”
