Quick tips to get better hairstyles
With spring and summer right around the corner, it’s a great time for both men and women to freshen their looks with a new hairstyle.
The Men
For guys, having shorter hair is definitely in.
“The faux hawk is really popular with guys right now,” Andrea Dailey, a stylist at Fix Salon said.
A faux hawk is not necessarily a mohawk. It’s when the stylist leaves a patch of hair that extends from the front to the back of the head. A guy can style it with gel, putty, balm or wax product; it basically creates an illusion of a mohawk.
“I like to use Bed Head hair sculpting wax, which cost like $18,” Jonathan William Hungerford, a freshman open-option major said.
Bed Head products can be found at beauty supply stores or at select Targets. Another great inexpensive product is Nexxus Retexxtur putty for $11.99 or styling putty by Garnier Fructis, which can set you back a little under $8. Both of these products can be purchased at most drug stores or Target.
Another stylish yet liberating hairstyle is the buzzed look. It’s a cool haircut that literally helps guys stay cool, and it is an easily maintainable look.
“I used to have really long hair but I donated it. I like having a buzzed head just because I don’t need to do a lot to maintain it,” Jon Geiger, a sophomore studio art major said.
Since guys typically have shorter hair, it is important to have it cut frequently.
“I recommend that guys should get a haircut at least every 4-6 weeks,” Dailey said.
The Ladies
Girls, on the other hand, have a little more work to do to keep up with trends this spring and summer.
“A very popular style is the A-line cut or a bob,” Dailey said.
Celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes are rocking the bob and making a chic trend for others.
“A bob generally looks good on anyone, and short is in,” Angela Simms, a stylists at Sabiha Salon said.
This haircut is super chic looking and is easy to maintain. It is also a great way to stay cool during the warm months to come.
“I love my short hair; it makes me fabulous. Love it!” said Melissa Phillips, a senior biochemistry major.
There are also ways to stay stylish with long hair. Long, soft and wavy layers are the way to go. Long, flowing layers create a cool, soft and elegant look.
With a chic hair cut, a good color needs to match it. This spring and summer, light and bright colors are in.
“Bright browns and blonde is great for spring and summer,” Simms said. “Stay away from darker colors and coppers and reds.”
Maintaining a beautiful head of hair should be an important factor. With dry mountainous climates, it’s hard to lock in moisture. A great tip is to use conditioner.
“Try applying conditioner after you towel dry your hair,” Simms said. “This helps lock in more moisture because when you hair is wet it absorbs the conditioner more.”
It is also important to apply some product before using a flat iron. A lot of companies offer shampoos that are great for hair with a lot of heat use. Thermasilk offers great inexpensive products ideal for hair that is straightened frequently or blow-dried.
It is also important not to over wash hair; it is best not to wash it more than three times a week. Whenever hair is washed, many natural oils that help keep the scalp from being dry are washed away.
Hair Cuts in shapes and prices!
Regardless of anyone’s budget, it is necessary to have a guide to finding the right haircut.
The Penny Pincher:
Every year, The UMC Bookstore hands out coupons for some great deals. Try looking at the hair coupons. There’s always some great deal in there like an $8.99 hair cut with blow dry from Great Clips.
Look in the Campus Cash coupon book because there are tons of coupons for 50% off cuts or $5 off. Take advantage of these things and use them up.
However, many places will charge extra for doing the simplest tasks. Make sure to go to an appointment with hair washed and wetted, ready to be cut. Refuse to use any of their products, because there is a good chance they will charge extra.
Also, try calling around salons because they usually offer student discounts or first time costumer discounts.
The Moderate Spender:
Places with moderately priced haircuts are really easy to find.
A great place to get a chic haircut at a moderate price is Salon Sabiha. This salon offers haircuts that range from $14-$65.
A haircut with new talent ranges from $14-$38.
“New talent are those stylists who are emerging into the business,” Simms said.
A color treatment only appointment for new talent ranges from $50-$60. It’s great to try out new places with new talent for a simple haircut. Just be sure to know exactly what you want.
Another great place for a descent hair cut is Pompadours on Pearl Street. Haircuts range from $30-$65. Other prices for services can be found on their Web site.
The Super Spender:
Salon Sabiha also offers haircuts from their master stylists that range from $60-$65 and color only treatments from $100-$125.
They are a salon that specializes in Aveda, which means they strictly use Aveda products and offer professional treatment.
Last Minute Tips
When you have an appointment, be sure to know what you want. It’s frustrating for a stylist to not know what to do. Print a picture or sketch it out; the more visual the better, especially with a color.
When unsatisfied, call the stylist and have them correct the error. Usually it’s free and they are more than happy to do so because they want satisfied customers who are willing to return in the future.
When making an appointment, be sure to ask what kind of hair they deal with. If you have thick curly hair, you want someone who is an expert in that field. This also goes for men; it is important to have someone familiar with men’s hair.
When someone with a nice haircut passes by, ask them where they got it done and get a card or a number for the stylist. Always ask because if someone loves their hair they are always more than willing to pass a stylist’s information down.
