CU senior competes in USA Indoor Championships
The CU track and field team has the Big 12 Indoor Championships coming up at the end of the month, and senior Hugh Charles got an extra practice session in over the weekend at the USA Indoor Championships Sunday.
Charles, who was the sole member of the Buff track team who competed in the meet, placed seventh in the long jump at the meet in Boston.
He flew out on his first jump and hit a 24 feet and 5.75 inches. It was his best jump of the day.
CU assistant track coach Lindsey Malone, who traveled with Charles to Boston, said she thought Charles did well in the track meet.
Charles was the only collegiate athlete of the 17 long jump participants. Visa, Nike, AT&T, Tyson, 24 Hour Fitness and Hershey all played a role in sponsoring the other 16 members of the event.
The winner of the long jump, Trevell Quinley of Nike, did not take the lead in Sunday’s competition until his fifth jump, which was 25 feet and 8.00 inches.
Quinley told the media Sunday that despite his victory, he felt he did not perform well. He and the other two top finishers in the event, Joe Allen, Mike Morrison, will move on to the IAAF World Indoor Championships March 7-9 in Valencia, Spain.
Charles, on the other hand, will reunite with the rest of his Colorado teammates as they prepare for their Feb. 29 – March 1 Big 12 championships in Lincoln, Nebraska.
