Roy Edwards gets 1st chance to bring on new players
Four new recruits signed with the University of Colorado men’s golf team. For Head Coach Roy Edwards, it was the first chance for him to go through a full recruiting process, as he was brought on as head coach in July 2006.
Signing letters of intent were Johnny Widmer of the Cayman Islands, Kevin Kring from Springfield, Mo., Josh Creel from Cheyenne, Wyo.; and Jason Burstyn from Miami, Fla.
“These are four guys that really want to be here, and I think that with some hard work they can really be contributors for us for the next couple of years,” Edwards said.
Widmer has played internationally five times for the Cayman Islands Men’s Team. Ranked as the No. 66 junior in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings, Widmer was a Caribbean Junior Championships honorable mention winner in both 2002 and 2006. He was the Cayman Island’s Men’s Champion in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
“He fell in love with Boulder right away,” Edwards said.
Kring was rated No. 99 in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings and No. 74 in the American Junior Golf Association this summer. He set the Missouri state high school record for low score with a 63 and had a 72.3 scoring average throughout his high school career.
“If we want to be really good next year, Kevin and the three others are going to have to have an immediate impact,” Edwards said.
Creel finished second in the Wyoming state meet as a senior, positing a two round score of 154. He had an impressive senior season, scoring average of 70.6 and was a first team all-state performer three of his four high school years.
Burstyn was ranked No. 120 in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings. With an even par 36.0 scoring average in high school, he had many top amateur finishes. Burstyn was named to the 2005 and 2006 Miami Herald All-Dade County golf teams.
Perhaps one of the strongest classes in recent history, Edwards said he is optimistic with his team’s current status.
“You never know how good a recruiting class is until they graduate, but these are four good players and good students – they have the whole package,” Edwards said.
