Smoking ban hot topic of discussions
CU Regent Michael Carrigan arrived at the UCSU meeting Thursday evening to discuss the possibility of the campus-wide smoking ban.
If a smoking ban comes to fruition, the “worst way to be made would be made by the board, imposed on all of you,” Carrigan said.
Carrigan said surveys showed 48 percent of CU students would favor such a ban, but that “smokers would more likely participate.”
“Is there any implication for us requiring (freshmen) to live (on campus) but not being allowed to smoke,” asked Representative-at-large and Legislative Council treasurer Kathryn Skrobacz.
Carrigan said he sees a “national trend” in fewer people smoking and believes students will begin to give up smoking, especially with a ban in place.
Other questions, such as whether to ban smoking campus-wide or create designated smoking zones, or whether to put the ban to a student-wide vote, were not clearly answered at the meeting. Carrigan put a timeline for the ban to start fall 2008 at the earliest.
Following the discussion with Carrigan was the approval of three members to the diversity commission, Karen Shimamoto, Neal Walia and Sepideh Mohseni. Seventeen people applied for the positions and the three approved came from a group of twelve originally accepted, according to the UCSU director of diversity affairs.
Also approved was the appointment of School of Journalism and Mass Communication Senator Margot Schneider, and Campus Press staff writer, to the Appointments Committee.
