Blackmon a true Texas gem
He’s sure this time.
Chance Blackmon has made his commitment to play for CU, and he says he’s keeping it.
Blackmon, a three-star wide receiver, committed to Colorado in April of this year. But once the recruiting season started to heat up over the summer and into the fall, he began to waver.
After withdrawing his initial commitment to CU, the high school standout from Tatum, Texas checked out other options like Florida, Missouri, Oklahoma State and Kansas State.
The Chance Blackmon File
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 185 pounds
Bench: 215
Squat: 375
40-yard dash: 4.54 seconds
But on a visit to Boulder the weekend of Colorado’s 19-10 loss to Kansas, Blackmon chose the Buffs.
For sure this time.
“It is just a great place to be,” Blackmon said. “I loved the coaches and the city. I just felt like it was a perfect fit for me. It was just a great visit.”
The 6-foot-3 wideout, who hadn’t visited the CU campus before October, will likely enter Colorado’s depth chart as a deep threat in the passing game. Blackmon has an ability to get downfield quickly in his 4.54-second 40-yard dash.
He calls himself a “Randy Moss-style” receiver.
“They see me as a guy that can run up and down the field and make big plays in their offense,” he said.
Blackmon has been Tatum’s primary deep threat the past three years. His junior year, Blackmon caught 33 passes for 850 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 25.7 yards per catch.
Battling pinched nerves in his back, he still holds a similar average this year, as Tatum is making a run for its third-straight Class 2A state title.
Blackmon is working on graduating early, so he can enroll and attend spring practices with the Buffs this coming semester.
Blackmon will join a young group of receivers, a selling point, he said. Five Colorado receivers are freshmen this year.
Freshman Scotty McKnight, who has snagged 40 passes for 454 yards, leads the Buffs in receiving. True freshman Josh Smith is second in receiving yardage with 431 yards on 21 passes.
“Colorado is really young, and I like that,” Blackmon said.
