Killing time with two needles

As winter approaches, it is almost time to break out the fuzzy apparel. The best way to secure a winter look? Knit something spectacular.
Knitting is not only a means to a trendy end, but it is also something you can do practically anywhere. It is a pastime that keeps your hands busy, and your creative juices . weaving.
The finished product can then be a gift or something for yourself.
The scarf is one of the easiest things to knit. The pattern is as simple as a straight line, thus it is terribly hard to mess up.
How to start: The basics
First, make sure you have standard knitting needles. Circular needles are pretty popular, especially for knitting hats and socks. Bamboo needles are becoming prevalent because they are softer than metallic ones.
Once you have your needles, it is time to invest in some yarn. There are many different types to choose from, but the easiest to use when beginning knitting is a simple cotton yarn.
Chunky and Superchunky are both super sized yarns and are about twice the size of Aran or worsted yarns. These bigger yarns make the scarf thicker, and make knitting a scarf faster. Yarns can be found at any craft store, including Michael’s which is located on 4800 Baseline Rd. Most of these yarns are about $3 to $5, so they can be easily bought on a college student’s budget.
Getting started: Casting on
Step 1:
Hold your needles parallel to each other. Then, take the yarn and make a slip knot around the left needle.
Step 2:
Make certain that the needle with the slip knot is on the left side. Slide the right needle up through the stitch.
Step 3:
The right needle should be behind the left needle, and they are crossed. Then, take the yarn in your right hand and wrap it around the right needle.
Step 4:
Pull the needle back so the end of the needle comes down and catches the loop.
Step 5:
Finally, slip the stitch off of the right needle, back onto the left needle. All the stitches should be on the left needle.
Repeat: In, Around, Through and Off
Step 1:
All your stitches should be on the left needle. Count them and remember that number. Hold the yarn at the back, out of the way.
Step 2: IN
Slide the tip of the right needle through the first loop so it crosses under the left needle.
Step 3: AROUND
The needles should be crossed, the right needle under the left. Take the yarn with your right hand and wrap it counter-clockwise around from the back of the right needle.
Step 4: THROUGH
Then slide the right needle back down through the stitch. This should create a loop on the right needle.
Step 5: OFF
Now slip off the stitch from the left to the right needle. The new stitch should be on the right needle.
Usually no one gets it the first time. The key is to work through the frustration. Read the directions carefully and when in doubt, ask Grandma. Happy knitting!
