Things tighten up as Margot temporarily takes over the lead. Editor-in-chief Maggie McDermott will be the guest picker.
The picks for the week:
Stirling Wade – Sports Editor – Overall: 33-31, Last Week: 2-6
(11) Virginia Tech 16, Georgia Tech 13 – Virginia Tech will bounce back after coughing one up last week against BC.
(21) Wisconsin 13, (1) Ohio State 28 – I’m still waiting for Ohio State to stub it’s toe, but I don’t think it happens against Wisconsin at home.
(24) Wake Forest 26, (23) Virginia 20 – Jim Grobe is due for a coaching offer from a big-time university soon. These are the games that his team has won in his time at Wake while these are the exact games that Al Groh has lost at Virginia.
(12) Michigan 34, Michigan State 20 – Michigan needs Mike Hart and Chad Henne back. Michigan has owned the Spartans of late however.
(15) Texas 24, Oklahoma State 27 – Texas was rather underwhelming for three quarters against lowly Nebraska. I think Oklahoma State exposes that Longhorn defense.
(3) LSU 17, (17) Alabama 10 – Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide isn’t ready for a win of this magnitude. LSU will be ready.
(4) Arizona State 26, (5) Oregon 31 – Does Dennis Dixon remind anyone else of Vince Young? He sure does for me, and I think he’ll be the difference in the game.
(9) Missouri 21, Colorado 24 – I might be nuts, but I just get a feeling that after CU’s big win this Saturday at Texas Tech the Buffs are on their way to a better season than anyone could’ve realistically thought.
Amanda Walck – Sports Writer – Overall: 28-35, Last Week: 5-3
(11) Virginia Tech 21, Georgia Tech 17 – A win against the Yellow Jackets will have the Hokies feeling a lot better than they did after last week.
(21) Wisconsin 35, (1) Ohio State 28 – The Buckeyes will keep their spot at the top after this match up on their home turf.
(24) Wake Forest 24, (23) Virginia 21 – Virginia’s injuries have them on the ropes this season. I’ll take the Demon Deacons on the road.
(12) Michigan 28, Michigan State 24 – After an embarrassing start to the season, Michigan now has to depend on backups at both quarterback and running back. Luckily, they were able to step up last week.
(15) Texas 31, Oklahoma State 28 – I’m not very impressed with Texas this year. That said, if Colt McCoy can keep his offense moving, the Longhorns should still take this one.
(3) LSU 31, (17) Alabama 24 – Alabama will put up a fight, but LSU will fight harder to avoid another upset.
(4) Arizona State 35, (5) Oregon 31 – ASU is one of the teams left to beat this season, but they will have to match the powerhouse running game of Oregon if they want to keep it that way.
(9) Missouri 28, Colorado 31 – My heart says CU, but my head says Missouri. Maybe we’re all nuts.I’ll go with the Buffs too.
Derek Schimmel – Sports Writer – Overall: 33-31, Last Week: 3-5
(11) Virginia Tech 24, Georgia Tech 10 – VT will be playing with a chip on their shoulder after being stunned by BC last week.
(21) Wisconsin 10, (1) Ohio State 38 – Jim Tressel’s defense is even better than his 2002 championship team. Combine that with their unstoppable offense and Wisconsin doesn’t stand a chance.
(24) Wake Forest 13, (23) Virginia 20 – Simple case of home field advantage.
(12) Michigan 28, Michigan State 13 – Mike Hart should be back in action. And he has some yards to make up.
(15) Texas 27, Oklahoma State 17 – Texas is a hit or miss team. They missed last week but still prevailed against Nebraska. They’ll hit this week against OK State.
(3) LSU 17, (17) Alabama 21 – Game of the week. I said LSU wouldn’t lose another game, but the SEC is crazy. I’ll take the home team.
(4) Arizona State 31, (5) Oregon 28 – A battle of PAC-10 powerhouses. Should be a high scoring affair, but Arizona State is playing too good of ball right now.
(9) Missouri 17, Colorado 24 – Home field advantage … a sunset over Folsom Field. The stage is set for an upset.
Brad Cochi – Sports Writer – Overall: 33-31, Last Week: 4-4
(11) Virginia Tech 21, Georgia Tech 16 – Virginia Tech lost to a good team in Boston College last week and not by much. They’ll bounce back.
(21) Wisconsin 13, (1) Ohio State 31 – Ohio State won’t falter at home at this point. When they do slip up, and they will, it will be in someone else’s house: Michigan.
(24) Wake Forest 21, (23) Virginia 24 – Virginia wins a close one at home.
(12) Michigan 28, Michigan St. 21 – Michigan has come along way since Appalachian State.
(15) Texas 21, Oklahoma State 24 – Texas hasn’t wowed anyone this year but they have a lot of pride as a program and they want to prove that they’re better than they have played this year . but they won’t.
(3) LSU 28, (17) Alabama 17 – Now that LSU knows how it feels to be upset, they’re interested in feeling that way again.
(4) Arizona State 31, (5) Oregon 35 – This will be a showdown of two teams trying to prove they have more firepower on offense. When the dust settles, Oregon will still be standing.
(9) Missouri 24, Colorado 21 – I wish I could pick the Buffs here but I have to force myself not to. But hey, I picked Texas Tech last week and look what happened.
Margot Schneider – Sports Writer – Overall: 36-28, Last Week: 5-3
(11) Virginia Tech 24, Georgia Tech 17 – Georgia Tech lost two running backs in that victory over Army . tough luck against the Hokies.
(21) Wisconsin 14, (1) Ohio State 31 – Now that South Florida is losing, I’m waiting for an Ohio State loss. I do not want a repeat of last year. I’m thinking it will be the Michigan game.
(24) Wake Forest 24, (23) Virginia 27 – I’m going with history on this one and calling Virginia – they won 19 of the last 20 meetings. And besides, I don’t think the loss to NC State was that bad.
(12) Michigan 34, Michigan State 14 – I’m glad Michigan is doing so well because I’m a huge App State fan, and the better the Wolverines do, the better the Mountaineers look. Go App! National Champions three years in a row!
(15) Texas 21, Oklahoma State 24 – Oklahoma State has surprised me a bit, and I haven’t been that impressed with Texas lately.
(3) LSU 31, (17) Alabama 17 – I think we should all get in brawls before big games. You know, to get pumped up.
(4) Arizona State 27, (5) Oregon 31 – Oregon going all the way? I could see it.
(9) Missouri 20, Colorado 17 – I think the entire Colorado football team, heck, the entire stadium, should run onto the field and cheer every time we get a touchdown! GO BUFFS!
Maggie McDermott – Editor-in-Chief
(11) Virginia Tech 24, Georgia Tech 17 – Virginia Tech will have luck on their side as they fight past the Yellow Jackets.
(21) Wisconsin 17, (1) Ohio State 14 – Ohio State will stumble against Wisconsin at home, and the Badgers will squeak by those pompous enough to refer to themselves as “The Ohio State.”
(24) Wake Forest 14, (23) Virginia 24 – The Demon Deacons will prevail on this post-Halloween weekend.
(12) Michigan 10, Michigan State 20 – This storied rivalry will end in Spartan victory in the two teams hundredth meeting.
(15) Texas 3, Oklahoma State 14 – Oklahoma State will beat Texas, mostly because I can’t bring myself to choose Texas to win anything.
(3) LSU 35, (17) Alabama 21 – LSU will handily beat Alabama and fight its way higher in the rankings.
(4) Arizona State 28, (5) Oregon 24 – The Sun Devils will continue their undefeated season with a close victory over Oregon. The game will certainly come down to the wire.
(9) Missouri 14, Colorado 17 – High off of last week’s victory, Colorado will go on to defeat Missouri. And of course, I have to root for the Buffs.
