Over 500 student voters participate, polls remain open through Friday
CORRECTION: TheCampusPress.com incorrectly reported in a headline that roughly 10 percent of the CU student body had voted Monday during the UCSU election. TheCampusPress.com prides itself on accuracy and regrets the error.
The University of Colorado Student Union marked the first day of fall elections Monday, Oct. 22, for Legislative Council and the Arts and Sciences Student Government.
As of 4:35 p.m. on Monday, 563 votes had been cast on the UCSU Legislative Council ballot, and 247 votes cast the Arts and Sciences Student Government ballot.
If the daily numbers of voter turnout for the rest of the week are the same as Monday, voter turnout will roughly be 10 percent of the student body. However, election commissioner Sean Daly is optimistic that the number of votes per day will increase as the week goes on.
“This fall I hope to achieve 20 percent turnout,” Daly said.
Advertising for the election has not stopped.
“We handed out 400 water bottles today,” Daly said.
UCSU also has an incentive for people to vote.
“We’re holding a drawing for anyone who votes and prints out a copy of their receipt or votes at the UCSU voting table,” Daly said. “[Voters] could win an iPod or gift certificate to Mamacita’s, Hapa or the Pit.”
Voting takes place online at CUConnect. It takes roughly three minutes to vote.
The election ends at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26.
