The University of Colorado Student Union will be holding a public debate Friday, October 19, for the 18 candidates running for five seats on Legislative Council and five seats in the Arts and Science Student Government.
The debate will be at 4:30 p.m. in Math 100.
Election commissioner Sean Daly is working with Justin Kutner, managing editor at the Campus Press, to plan the structure of the event.
“It will be set up in a way that will give all candidates the opportunity to respond to each question in a limited amount of time, and we’re hoping to be able to take questions from the audience towards the end if we have time,” Kutner said.
Kutner and Daly are currently in the process of putting the debate questions together, but Kutner did speak on what sort of questions will be asked.
“We’re going to ask a variety of things like where (the candidates) stand on different events that happen at CU, diversity, hopefully social issues like the Greek system and what they plan to do while holding office and representing students,” Kutner said.
Daly expects roughly 300 people to attend the candidate debate. Last spring, a similar debate between the Tri-executive candidates was held in Math 100 and nearly filled the large classroom.
“Fall (elections) are generally less dramatic, but we hope to fill the room,” Daly said.
For students who can’t make it to the debate but still want to know what is happening, the debate will be blogged live on the Campus Press.
“The great thing about debate is that it really brings out issues,” Daly said, “Often times when you look at (the candidates’) Web sites and biographies, they generally have very similar platforms. Although they may have the same platform, usually (the candidates) have a different take or point of view that (voters) might be interested to hear.”
