Students invite dismissed professor back to teach
Ward Churchill has unofficially resumed teaching at CU.
Students invited the dismissed professor to come teach a class on campus. The university does not sanction this class, however, so students who attend will not receive credit.
The class, entitled “ReVisioning American History: Colonization, Genocide and the Formation of the U.S. Settler State,” will be held Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Humanities 1B80.
According to Churchill, “ReVisioning America” comes down to four constructs: conquest, colonization, genocide and race. The first three lessons will focus on these topics. After that, the students will choose the direction the class will take.
Students felt that the school was not the same without Churchill’s classes.
“We are deprived of his teachings and critical analysis of common thought,” said Aaron Smith, a senior political science and ethnic studies major. “I disagree with the decision to fire him.”
A warning to anyone wanting to sit in on the class: leave the cell phones at home or be thrown out of the class. This strict policy is to ensure that none of Churchill’s teachings will be recorded.
Churchill plans to teach the class his own way, which, he says, doesn’t always include the truth.
“Truth is something you aspire to,” said Churchill. “It’s not something that can be simply taught.”
Since this is not a university-sanctioned class, there will not be any tests, or any kind of adjudication. Churchill only wants one thing, which is for students to walk away with some knowledge.
“Students should get what they want out of my class,” Churchill said.
