Here’s the Campus Press sports section’s picks of the week:
Stirling Wade-Sports Editor-Overall: 17-7, Last Week: 5-3
(5) West Virginia 26, (18) South Florida 23 – Every week West Virginia seems uninspiring to me while USF seems very good. I guess I’m going with my gut here.
(6) Cal 31, (11) Oregon 35 – This could be one of the most entertaining games of the entire season. Unlike above, I’ll take the home team.
(13) Clemson 24, Georgia Tech 21 – It’s a little too early in the year for Clemson’s annual collapse.
(22) Alabama 13, Florida State 16 – That Florida State defense will do enough to keep its offense from getting in the way.
Auburn 10, (4) Florida 27 – That Auburn offense is terrible.
Kansas State 16, (7) Texas 17 – Texas narrowly avoids getting caught looking ahead toward Oklahoma.
Notre Dame 30, Purdue 33 – The much-maligned Irish offense will show a lot of improvement but not enough.
(3) Oklahoma 35, CU 13 – I keep trying to picture a way CU pulls off the mammoth upset. I just can’t do it.
Amanda Walck-Sports Writer-Overall: 12-12, Last Week: 4-4
(5) West Virginia 28, (18) South Florida 21 – Steve Slaton will lead the Mountaineers to a redeeming victory after running for only 43 yards against the Bulls last year.
(6) Cal 35, (11) Oregon 37 – An even match-up will make this game another close one in the Pac-10.
(13) Clemson 28, Georgia Tech 17 – With all their injuries, I feel like Georgia Tech has no chance to bring down Clemson.
(22) Alabama 24, Florida State 14 – The Crimson Tide will dominate the Seminoles in their first meeting since 1974.
Auburn 13, (4) Florida 28 – Auburn just does not have the same luck that they received when they beat Florida last year.
Kansas State 14, (7) Texas 31-Texas will not be making any mistakes in what should be an easy conference game.
Notre Dame 24, Purdue 28 – Notre Dame may have to wait a while to get that first win of the season.
(3) Oklahoma 31, CU 14 – I just feel like there’s no way CU can win. Maybe we can hope for a miracle.
Derek Schimmel-Sports Writer-Overall: 15-9, Last Week: 4-4
(5) West Virginia 28, (18) South Florida 20 – South Florida is the best team that you know nothing about. Unfortunately, everyone knows about West Virginia. It’ll be close, but the Slaton/White/Devine connection is too strong.
(6) Cal 21, (11) Oregon 35 – I’m very high on Oregon, and the number 6 ranking for Cal seems a little too high. Oregon moves into the top 7 after a win at home.
(13) Clemson 17, Georgia Tech 21 – Clemson has been winning games, but with the exception of FSU, they haven’t done anything too impressive.
(22) Alabama 17, Florida State 10 – Should be a great game. Two legendary coaches, but youth will overcome experience. Saban’s Tide wins a defensive battle.
Auburn 14, (4) Florida 45 – Auburn just isn’t very good. And Florida is just that good. Blowout.
Kansas State 10, (7) Texas 35 – Texas is still considered one of the most overrated teams in the country. It isn’t true.
Notre Dame 14, Purdue 31 – Not yet Irish. Purdue could make a push against Ohio State for the Big 10 title.
(3) Oklahoma 42, CU 21 – This is usually where I have some fun and say the Buffaloes will pull a rabbit out of their hat. Not this time. Oklahoma will win it, and not lose again until their showdown with either LSU or USC in the National Championship game.
Brad Cochi-Sports Writer-Overall: 16-8, Last Week: 4-4
(5) West Virginia 31, (18) South Florida 21 – I just don’t think South Florida is capable of putting up the kind of points West Virginia can.
(6) Cal 34, (11) Oregon 38 – Dennis Dixon hasn’t thrown and interception all season. Oregon’s ball control and big play ability win them this game.
(13) Clemson 31, Georgia Tech 17 – I love C.J. Spiller to find the holes in Georgia Tech’s formidable run defense.
(22) Alabama 21, Florida State 16 – Coming of that heartbreaking overtime loss to Georgia last week; Alabama will come out strong and win this one.
Auburn 17, (4) Florida 35 – Auburn doesn’t have a chance in this one.
Kansas State 14, (7) Texas 34 – Texas hasn’t forgotten about Kansas State ruining their hopes for a national championship last year. This game will get ugly.
Notre Dame 17, Purdue 28 – Notre Dame is bad . really bad.
(3) Oklahoma 38, Colorado 17 – All I have to say is this is going to be a tough one to watch for Buffs fans. I’m almost glad I’ll be covering the cross-country meet Saturday so I won’t have to see this in person . almost.
Margot Schneider-Sports Writer-Overall: 16-7, Last Week: 3-5
(5) West Virginia 24, (18) South Florida 27 – George Selvie helped South Florida beat the Mountaineers last year, and he’s back. This is going to be one of, if not the most, challenging game on WVU’s schedule, and they aren’t perfect.
(6) Cal 34, (11) Oregon 38 – Cal is going to run, run, & run some more. Then Oregon is going to come back with a few passes. On any other day, I’d pick Cal, but defensive injuries may be just enough to push Oregon to a win.
(13) Clemson 34, Georgia Tech 17 – I can’t wait to see C.J. Spiller and James Davis run all over that Yellow Jacket defense.
(22) Alabama 17, Florida State 14 – I pick ‘Bama to win every week, so I wouldn’t want to change that now. Still think this is a tough team to beat, and the Seminoles aren’t up for a challenge like that.
Auburn 20, (4) Florida 27- The Gators are not going to let this one get away again. Winning streak: intact.
Kansas State 16, (7) Texas 27 – The Longhorns are starting to come out and really play like a top 10 team. K-State isn’t quite ready for that.
Notre Dame 13, Purdue 48 – If you believe in karma, please tell me: what in the world did Notre Dame do?
(4) Oklahoma 34, CU 17- The Buffs get their running game going only to face the number four team in the country in rushing defense. Unfortunate, but at least they’ll get to display their defense on television for the last time until the Nebraska game.
