With thousands of participants, intramurals hopes to have something for nearly everyone
A new school year brings new opportunities for friendly competition and a chance at greatness.
Each semester, thousands of students compete in various intramural sports for a shot at a title. The intramural program has several popular sports, including basketball, soccer, flag football, dodgeball and broomball that fill to capacity each season, said CU’s Intramural Coordinator Annie Mulvany.
“Students play intramurals for several reasons. The bond among teammates, the competition, the fitness aspect and the fun and social atmosphere that intramurals bring,” Mulvany said.
Amanda Abrahams, 20, a junior advertising major, has competed in both broomball and dodgeball for the past two years. She agrees that intramurals fill a big role for students on many different levels.
“It’s a chance to play sports I would have never played,” Abrahams said. “It was fun and I had the chance to be doing it with my friends.”
This coming fall season, CU intramurals seek to improve the program by adding several special tournaments, new equipment and better-educated officials.
In the coming weeks, CU will hold its 1st Annual Welcome Back Tournament, which will include 3-on-3 soccer, 4-on-4 sand volleyball and 3-on-3 outdoor basketball.
Daniel Goldstein, 20, a sophomore history major, has been playing both ultimate Frisbee and hockey since the first semester of his freshman year. Goldstein has won five intramural titles, posting each of his championship T-shirts on the wall in his room as something of a tribute to his self-described greatness.
“I’ve been straight dominating ever since freshman year,” Goldstein said. “You have to be competitive in intramurals, because it’s all about the T-shirt.”
The CU intramurals program plans to introduce a new shirt color and design this year.
Registration for fall intramurals begins Sept. 4.
