Hair salon mixes pink with an industrial look
Adorned with bright walls, elaborate paintings, brass sculptures, exotic plants and pink and blue haired dogs, Zing is not a typical hair salon.
Joy Douglas the owner and stylist, runs her salon side-by-side with her colorful Pomeranian, Yorkie and Pocket Poodle.
Stylists and receptionists run errands using pink mopeds and pop Zing’s signature pink cotton candy popcorn for customers.
Douglas tries to keep the ambiance of the salon fresh and interesting.
“We are constantly in the process of renovating to make every experience a little different for customers,” she said.
Salina Andazola, a stylist at Zing, agrees.
“Sometimes we are here until two or three in the morning changing things around and remodeling-there is something to look at in every corner of this salon,” she said.
Stylists use Craftsman tool boxes to store supplies, giving Zing a more industrial look.
“We didn’t want to scare men away from our salon with our pink walls, so having the tool boxes gives the salon a more masculine feel,” Douglas said.
Besides creating the salon’s unique atmosphere, Douglas uses her business to help charity organizations and local artists.
Right now, Zing is contributing to the non-profit Kudzidza Foundation, which helps educate communities in Zimbabwe. If customers bring in an old laptop for donation, they are entered into a raffle for a free hair cut.
Artwork from local artists festoons the already brilliant walls, making the business as much of an art gallery as a salon.
Some of the stylists have also contributed to the artwork at Zing. Douglas herself sculpts the large brass decorations and lamps at Zing.
The stylists enjoy working in such an artistic atmosphere.
“Everyone is an artist here. Styling hair is an art form,” Andazola said. “I love this environment and I look forward to coming to work here everyday.”
Jarred Armijo, also a Zing stylist, said, “I think it is the coolest salon in Boulder or in Denver – it has a really unique, fun look and all the stylists are individuals with their own different artistic talents.”
Just off Pearl Street at 1100 Spruce St., Zing Salon is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and welcomes appointments as well as walk-ins.
Zing Salon uses only L’Oreal Professional dyes and products.
“L’Oreal products are the best of the best,” Douglas said.
Armijo agrees.
“L’Oreal has really special protein technology which repairs the hair,” he said.
