Ambiance, great-tasting food contribute to dining experience
Lulu’s Kitchen joined the Hill this month, taking the space once home to the Albums Bistro. This addition is proving to be a bit different from the typical fast and inexpensive restaurants students familiarly dine at on the Hill.
Lulu’s is a small, colorful restaurant with big flavor and friendly, knowledgeable service.
Our server, Elizabeth, helped us decide which entree to order because we couldn’t make up our minds with everything on the menu sounding so delicious.
Each dinner entree has large portions and comes with two side dishes. My dinner partner and I decided to split the blackened catfish with crawfish cream sauce ($14). We picked mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese for side dishes.
While waiting for our food to arrive, we sat at our table with a vase full of purple and yellow carnations and a window view. We were able to admire the many murals that accented on the walls.
After a few minutes, our server brought out our steaming hot dinner.
The catfish was tender, slightly spicy and completely delicious. However, the fish paled in comparison to the creamy yellow sauce smothering it. If the plate had not been so hot, my companion and I might have licked it clean.
The macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes turned out to be good choices for side dishes. I loved the mashed potatoes because they were fluffy and the gravy had a tangy bite to it. The macaroni and cheese was cheesy as well as spicy, which was unique. Too spicy for me, but my dinner guest enjoyed them.
For dessert, we had the Bourbon Street pecan pie ($6) with ice cream and whipped cream. This pie was a rich, sugary treat with a strong hint of bourbon.
The food is pricier than most of the restaurants on the Hill, but everything at Lulu’s was worth the cost, especially if you split an entree with someone. Lulu’s is perfect if you are looking for a higher-quality restaurant instead of the typical Hill sandwich or burrito spot.
Leaving the restaurant, our server and the bartender thanked us and said they hoped we would come again. The employees seem to genuinely respect and value their customers.
