Imported snow will allow competitors to ride on campus
Boulder Freeride and the CU Outdoor Program will hold its second annual Rail Jam April 13 on the field in front of the rec- center at 7 p.m. The competition will feature a field comprised of industry snowboarders and skiers and riders from the CU Snowboard Team.
The competition, which was held on College Avenue on the Hill last year, will take place on a rail modeled after a popular rail at Red Rocks Amphitheater, said Jordan Levandoski, a senior integrative physiology major and member of the CUST.
The Rail Jam will be part of the CU Outdoor Program and Boulder Freeride Moutainfest ’07, which will also include climbing and kayaking competitions, live music, free food and a gear swap, according to the event’s Web site at http://www.colorado.edu/rec-center/programs/outdoor/expo.htm.
The competitors from the CUST will be chosen from tryouts on Wednesday and Thursday at Winter Park, Levandoski said. Two competitors- one male and one female- will be chosen each day for a total of four. The rest of the competitors will be from the industry, Levandoski said.
“It’s going to be a lot of local industry riders from up in the mountains,” Levandoski said. “We get sponsors for the event, and the they bring in their riders. This is one of our main moneymakers for the year.”
Sponsors for the event include Smith, K2 and Section.
The snow will be shipped into CU by trucks from Eldora Mountain and Winter Park. The trucks are expensive, Levandoski said, but the club has a deal with the ski mountains to ship in the snow rather inexpensively.
Second annual Rail Jam to start April 13
Jennifer Payne, a junior environmental design major, went to the Rail Jam last year and will be attending again on Friday.
“The rail competition was really good last year,” Payne said. “The riders were awesome and the whole thing was really well done. I have some friends on the snowboard team so I’m going to check it out again this year too.”
The competition will take place from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Free food from Illegal Pete’s will be delivered at 10:30 p.m. and awards will be handed out at 11 p.m. For the complete schedule, visit http://www.colorado.edu/rec-center/programs/outdoor/schedule.htm.
