Pack away the gloves and hats, say goodbye to winter
March 21 marked the first day of spring, which means warm weather has arrived. There are things you can do to keep cool without putting a dent into your bank account.
According to About, Inc., having a refrigerated spray mist bottle can cool you down. In the bottle, you should put one part witch hazel, one part lemon juice and two parts water. The witch hazel makes you feel cooled off and the lemon juice gives you a nice scent.
TOP TEN WAYS TO STAY COOL
1. Blue Mineral Ice
2. Ice cubes in humidifier
3. Spray mist bottle
4. Ice block
5. Ice pack
6. The pool
7. Cool liquids
8. Wearing light colored clothing
9. Staying the shade
10. Wearing a hat.
About, Inc. also suggests getting a generic brand of muscle relaxant gel — it can be found at any drug store for about $3. Rub it on your knees, neck or shoulders to stay cool.
Another trick for staying cool is having a fan on reverse cycle in the window. This helps to push out all the hot air. Keeping the doors and windows shut during the day also helps to keep the warm air out.
Also, during the spring and summer you can hear the sound of the ice cream truck going up and down the streets of the Hill. It is always stocked with plenty of cold treats to help cool you down.
With so many outdoor actives happening in Boulder during the summer, the best way to fight the heat is to wear a hat and always keep lots of water on hand. Wearing white instead of black helps to repel the sun.
Trying to stay cool while sleeping is not always an easy task. According to About, Inc., you should put ice cubes in a humidifier and point the fan directly at your bed. The ice melts slowly, allowing you to have a cool breeze throughout the night.
Arezu Berzinji, a junior English major, suggests from her own experience that keeping out of the sun helps keep you cool.
“I like to go the pool and stay in the shade,” Berzinji said.
Taylor Moritz, a junior pre-journalism major, uses ice packs to stay cool.
“I put the ice pack on my back or on my neck,” Moritz said.
