March 5
- A 29-year-old Boulder man was arrested on suspicion of motor vehicle theft, DUI and careless driving after he took a Pearl Street Mall street sweeper for a joy ride at about 5:30 a.m. The woman who had been driving the street sweeper noticed the vehicle had been taken after she had parked it at 11th and Pearl streets.
- A 22-year-old Boulder man was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence-related harassment and child abuse after officers were called to a disturbance at New West Inn, 970 28th St. A verbal interaction amounting to harassment occurred during a custody exchange of a 3-year-old child. The child was not physically injured. According to Boulder police spokeswoman Julie Brooks, the man had pulled the child out of the mother’s arms, thus placing the child in danger and constituting the charge of child abuse.
- A 20-year-old Oregon man was arrested on suspicion of trespass, fraudulent ID prohibited and public urination charges after police were called to the 1800 block of Grove Street on a report of a trespass and possible burglary in progress. Officers found the man on the porch of the victim’s house wearing a coat and boxer shorts, his pants near the porch. The man was also found to be in possession of a fraudulent ID.
March 6
- A 63-year-old woman was arrested on a warrant for child abuse stemming from an incident reported while she was substitute teaching at Creekside Elementary School in February. She is accused of striking a 10-year-old female student in the head with a viola bow during orchestra class. The affidavit for the arrest warrant is available through the court. Mug photos are obtained from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
- Officers investigated the unattended death of a 27-year-old female in the 3100 block of Madison Avenue. Detectives investigated at the scene, and there are no suspicious circumstances. Boulder PD spokeswoman Julie Brooks said in order for a death to be deemed “suspicious,” there needs to be evidence at the scene that the victim was killed by another person. There was no trauma or foul play suspected in this case, according to Brooks.
- An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of numerous charges after police were called to the area of the 2800 block of Kalmia Avenue on a report of trespassers in the hot tub area of the clubhouse. The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute (a class 4 felony), second-degree criminal trespass, minor in possession, as well as criminal impersonation (a class 6 felony) after he provided officers with a fake name. A second man in the case was taken into custody on an active warrant for failing to comply on an original traffic charge.
- A 20-year-old man was summonsed for indecent exposure after police received a report that he was walking in the area of 13th Street and Arapahoe Avenue waving his shorts in the air, fully exposing himself.
March 7
- Officers were dispatched to the 4800 block of Broadway on a report of a vehicle that had struck a building at that location. The building suffered moderate damage. The 52-year-old driver appeared to have suffered medical problems while driving and later died.
- Officers were dispatched to a vehicle fire in the second level of the parking garage at 16th and Pearl streets. The vehicle was unattended, and the fire appeared to have started in the engine compartment. Although there is no indication of arson, the fire is under investigation.
CUPD Blotter
March 5
- Criminal trespass at the College Inn dorm was reported. A former resident of the building had allegedly trespassed back in. The suspect jumped off the second-floor balcony to an adjacent rooftop to avoid the housing manager, who had been alerted to this individual’s presence. Officers did not apprehend the suspect, but they have identified him and are currently seeking him.
- A forged parking permit was confiscated from a vehicle parked in Lot 418. Officers were alerted to the situation by the parking attendant, who noticed the fake permit had been photocopied from a legitimate permit. Officers impounded the vehicle.
March 6
- CU student Philip D. McFann (DOB 3/25/1988) was issued a summons for theft after shoplifting from the CU Bookstore. Security personnel at the bookstore witnessed the suspect allegedly stealing a $42 textbook.
- CU student Douglas P. Steinhurst (DOB 12/7/1987) was issued a summons for obedience to red signal light required. Steinhurst’s vehicle was stopped at a red light northbound on 30th at Baseline and turned right when right turns are not permitted during red lights. Officers also seized a small amount of marijuana sitting in plain sight inside the vehicle. The marijuana was destroyed.
