Those without reliable transportation will have trouble seeing this summer’s new flicks
For movie buffs here in Boulder, going to see the newest flick and buying a bag of popcorn this summer could be a bit of a drive.
Although they refused to comment on an exact closing date, Landmark Crossroads Cinema at 2895 Pearl St. is expected to close in the next few months, and The Village Theatre at 2525 Arapahoe Ave. has already closed.
Once the Landmark is closed, movie watchers will have to drive to Louisville, Flatirons Crossing, or Longmont to see films on the big screen.
“I don’t have a car, so getting out to Flatirons Mall to see a movie is really difficult for me. I will really miss the Village Theatre. I think it is really dumb that the 29th Street Mall movie theatre isn’t open because the summer is getting closer and the summer is when all the good movies are playing,” said Miranda Longaker, a junior music major.
The 29th Street Mall’s Cinemark USA Inc.’s 16-screen movie theater complex may open in time for the July 4 weekend, said Frank Gonzales, regional marketing manager for Cinemark, in a recent Daily Camera article.
“Spider-Man 3,” “Shrek the Third,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and “Ocean’s 13” will be released at the end of May and beginning of June. For these big summer movies, the 29th Street Mall’s July theatre opening date is too late.
Chris Wilson, a student at the University of Denver visiting some of CU friends, stood in line at the AMC Flatiron Crossing 14 for tickets to “Night at The Museum.”
“I am really excited for the next ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie. I plan on seeing it opening night and dressing up as a pirate with some friends. It would be a lot easier if there was a nice theatre to go to in Boulder, but I don’t really mind the drive to this one,” he said.
Rebacca Baldwin, a freshman Spanish major, doesn’t mind the trek to Flatirons.
“I actually like driving out to the Flatirons theatre because there are good places to eat at before the movie, and it is a lot easier to park here than it is to park in Boulder. Boulder having or not having a movie theatre won’t change my plans,” Baldwin said. Whether movie goers prefer Boulder theatres or prefer the trip to Louisville or Flatirons, there won’t be many choices this summer.
