Local gas station offers 20 cent discount for Buff victory
Imagine the CU football team winning. Now imagine saving 20 cents per gallon on gas because they won, and imagine this being more than just your imagination.
PDQ Food and Fuel at 5200 Manhattan Circle in Boulder is giving every motorist this discount the Sunday after a Buff football victory. The discount will be offered from 6 a.m. to noon every Sunday after a Buffs win on the previous Saturday.
“Well, my boss is a very big fan of CU, and he figured it’d be a real nice thing to do for CU – every time they win to give them a bonus,” said Tom Tomass, assistant manager. “The office liked the idea, so that’s how we go to it.”
Despite CU’s 0-4 record this season and a heartbreaking one-point loss against Georgia, Tomass and the rest of the management believe the team is finally starting to find momentum.
“I think the Buffs kicked ass against Georgia, and they are going to slaughter Missouri. CU has too much momentum now, and we are looking forward to giving away the discount,” Tomass said.
If the Buffs come out victorious in this Saturday’s game against Missouri – or any game this season – losing some profit is foreseeable, but PDQ is not worried.
“We could be taking a loss, but then again it’s what we decided to do, and it will bring more people in the store. If someone buys something inside, it could compensate for the loss at the pump,” Tomass said.
PDQ’s management also wants to encourage the community to get excited about all the Saturday games.
“The purpose was for support for the team and to give some additional cheers for them to win, be it for selfish reasons because they want the discount on the gas. But for whatever reason, we just want more action at the store,” Tomass said.
For a broke college student, the idea of such a discount is exciting.
“The main reason I do not drive my car very much is because gas is expensive, so giving gas discounts to rally support behind our football team is awesome,” Christina Sprague, a junior accounting major, said.
Others seem skeptical that the Buffs will have a winning season at all.
“I don’t think the Buffs will win a lot this season, so the discount won’t matter much. But I would love to get 20 cents off, considering I only get 14 miles per gallon,” Chris Melhauser, a junior mechanical engineering major, said.
