Environmental Center’s plan to be evaluated by Boulder council
Boulder City Council last night agreed to consider endorsing the CU Environmental Center’s Blueprint for a Green Campus.
The plan is a set of goals that would be implemented over the next several years to make CU more environmentally friendly.
Blueprint goals include achieving “zero climate impact” by 2025, reducing water use and creating a waste-free campus, according to environmental center documents. Policies outlined in the blueprint aim to cut costs while increasing purchasing of environment-friendly products and services. The plan also encourages the addition of an environmental literacy course to the core curriculum.
CU Environmental Center Director Dave Newport explained the plan to council and asked them to consider supporting and endorsing it.
Newport said the CU campus can ideally continue to grow while reducing both its costs and environmental impact. CU and Boulder have the resources to make the Blueprint successful, Newport said, but “it won’t be easy.”
UCSU Environmental Director and junior environmental studies major Amy Harris also addressed the council.
“I see great opportunities here for the students at CU to partner with the city of Boulder to achieve the goals of this document,” Harris said.
Harris called the Blueprint’s goals “ambitious, yet feasible.”
Boulder Mayor Mark Ruzzin agreed the city and the university can collaborate on the issue. The Blueprint “meets university goals and meets city goals,” he said.
