Sports, drama and the civil rights movement come together in my favorite sports movie. “Remember the Titans” touches your soul from start to finish. It is a story about a football team that is being integrated into a school for blacks and whites. Players of a 1971 football team have to move past their own racism for one another in order to play unified games. This movie is a testament to the brutally divided past that touched every cornerstone of life in America, including high school football.
Sports Co-Editor Scott Annis – “The Replacements“
The Replacements may not be the best movie ever, but it is my favorite. Keanu Reeves plays a quarterback who is given a second chance in the NFL when the real players go on strike. Replacement players enter the league from different backgrounds and experience levels, which makes for a hilarious movie. The cheerleaders are on strike as well, which only adds more replacements that don’t know what they are doing. There is a love story mixed in somewhere. “The Replacements” is the ultimate underdog story where these guys who aren’t in the NFL, for one reason or another, are given a chance to play on the biggest stage and are given a second chance in life and football. It is a must see for football fans.
Reporter Jessica Malknecht – “Coach Carter“
My favorite sports movie has to be “Coach Carter.” It is one of the most inspiring movies that I have ever watched. Coach Carter does his best to instill discipline and respect into his players by teaching them that it is not all about basketball, it’s about becoming a better person on and off the court. We watch the players grow as individuals and follow their dreams. You do not need to play basketball to find this movie motivational.
Reporter Grayson O’Roark – “Remember the Titans“
“Favorite sports movie” is a toughie. My mind first went to comedies such as “Bull Durham” and “Space Jam,” but I also thought of dramas like “Field of Dreams,” and classics like “Miracle on Ice.” Ultimately, I ended up picking a mixture of all those categories, which left me with “Remember the Titans.” You can’t help but love Denzel Washington, in all movies, all the time. Another selling point is the “Remember the Titans” soundtrack with greats like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Express Yourself.”
