CU ski team in car accident

After a car accident involving the CU alpine ski team, heach coach Richard Rokos said he hopes the incident will make him and his team more cautious drivers – although he doesn’t believe it was entirely the drivers’ faults.

“The road was in such a condition that it’s not right for anyone to blame them,” Rokos said. “But my philosophy is what doesn’t hurt you makes you better in the long run.”

Rokos said the team was heading to practice at Eldora Resort around 7 a.m. Sunday morning when the first van struck a snow bank, resulting in it tipping onto its side. Shortly after, the second van ran into a minivan driving in the opposite direction.

Rokos said the accidents happened not far from Boulder and both CU vehicles, Dodge Sprinters, were totaled.

“It was about three or four miles out of town, about a half mile west of Four Mile Canyon,” Rokos said.

Rokos said the 10 skiers and two coaches involved, as well as the passengers of the third vehicle, did not sustain any major injuries.

Rokos said, “A couple kids went to the hospital to get checked out and they were released very soon (after).”
