Twitter became primary Boulder fire information source

About Adrian Kun

Adrian is a senior political science major from Massachusetts. This will be his fifth semester with the CU Independent in three different positions: news reporter, entertainment editor and managing editor. After [hopefully] graduating in May, Adrian would like to move to Washington, D.C. and perhaps gather dry cleaning for some lucky politician, before going to law school. You can spot him running from time to time by his unnecessarily short shorts, and general lack of clothing. He likes attention and loves chocolate. If you like good movies Adrian suggests “Cop Out” (with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan) claiming it’s the best movie made in a decade. At least. Drop by Room 206 in the Armory to say hi to him!

There was a lot to be learned from this fire – for instance, how quickly the community adopted the #boulderfire tag, and how the most useful resources seemed to win over the less useful ones – kind of a survival of the fittest. I also think there is a place for on-the-fly sites to aggregate social media resources (for example I created a page at http://allhazards.blogspot.com/2010/09/colorado-wild-fire-resources.html) which got many hits, and made people aware of other resources like the Google maps and audio scanner feeds.

There is a discussion about this and a list of other articles discussing the use of Twitter and social media in this fire at http://allhazards.blogspot.com/2010/09/four-mile-canyon-wildfire-and-social.html
